Big Screen TV Size and Viewing Distance

You don't need a TV size chart!  Here's a simple to remember general rule of thumb regarding TV screen size as related to seating distance.

Take the television's screen size in inches (measured from one corner of the screen to the diagonally opposite corner of the screen).

Divide that number by 5 to get the approximate number of feet you'll want to be seated back from the front of the screen.

Actually, the ideal big screen TV viewing distance can also depend on other factors.  The most important is whether you plan on watching mostly 1080i or 720p HDTV programming or just standard definition TV.

Basically, it boils down to this:  Because the television screen's resolution is much higher and the dots or pixels making up your picture are more tightly packed together on a 1080p or 720p high definition TV than they are with standard definition television, you may be able to enjoy a much bigger TV screen size than you ever imagined possible.
